Research & Design

Begin the process with research. Spend several hours studying the subject in its natural environment. This is where you find the essence of the species you want to reflect in your work. Create sketches and clay models of the concept you want to portray. Decide on the composition, cut each element out of tupelo wood with a band saw.

Shaping

Loosely, tear away at the wood, looking for the shapes within. Use a foredom power tool to achieve this technique. The wood will slowly begin to take form.

Detail

Use a high speed power tool with an assortment of bits to establish patterns and textures in the wood. This process can take hours, days or even weeks to complete. Pay attention to every minute detail. Finish the fine detail with
a wood burner.

Painting

Base coats are established with an airbrush or paint brush. Several thin
layers of paint are built up to create a realistic look. The sculptures are
painted with acrylic paints.
